Taking time for yourself is essential to your overall wellness

If you’ve ever thought, “I know I should take better care of myself, but I just can’t right now,”—you’re not alone.

As working moms, we carry a mental checklist that never ends. It’s more than just the physical tasks—it’s the invisible load: remembering the permission slips, the grocery list, the emotional state of everyone in the household, the dentist appointments, the work deadlines, the mental math of “what’s for dinner?” I still remember the first time I had to figure out what to feed my oldest daughter for dinner after she started eating solids. I was coming home from work when it hit me—I couldn’t just throw in a frozen pizza and call it a night. Suddenly, even dinner had a whole new layer of responsibility.

And in the middle of all that, wellness often feels like just one more thing we’re not doing well enough.

Why Wellness Feels So Hard

ree

There are a few sneaky myths that keep many of us stuck:

  • Myth 1: Self-care is selfish. We’ve been taught that taking time for ourselves means we’re taking it away from someone else. But the truth is, you can’t pour from an empty cup—and trying to do so just builds resentment, stress, and burnout.

  • Myth 2: I have to overhaul everything to feel better. We believe if we can't go all-in, it’s not worth starting. But small, gentle changes are more powerful—and more sustainable—than extreme routines.

  • Myth 3: I just need more willpower. Willpower isn't the issue. Most of the time, we're simply lacking systems, support, and rest—not motivation.

What Actually Helps

The path back to wellness isn’t paved with punishment or perfection. It starts with a few key shifts:

Taking a little time to relax during the day helps

🌿 Permission instead of guilt - You are allowed to take up space and have needs. You don’t have to earn rest or justify your self-care.

🌿 Boundaries that create clarity - Boundaries aren’t walls—they’re guidelines. When you set clear boundaries, you’re offering kindness and clarity to the people around you. You’re saying: “Here’s what I can do right now,” which makes things easier for everyone—not harder.

🌿 Tiny, consistent steps - Wellness isn’t built in big gestures. It’s in the 10-minute walk, the deep breath before dinner, the glass of water instead of another cup of coffee. Small steps create real momentum.
